Oh, the things we do to look young and beautiful. Each year, some bizarre new trend emerges that everyone loses their mind over. We rounded up a few of the wackiest beauty trends that have become increasingly popular in 2016.
You might have heard of cupping therapy as a way to relax and release toxins from the body. What was once only offered as a body treatment is now featured as a common facial to reduce wrinkles and puffiness from the face by sucking out all of the toxins. The cupping process consists of special cups that suction to your face to promote circulation, allowing more oxygen to your skin. The only downside occurs once the suction cups are removed, and there are red welts on your face for a few hours. It is important to leave this crazy treatment to the professionals and to not try this at home, for it could cause long-term bruising if done incorrectly.
Baking, strobing, and now water dunking. The beauty trend that originated in Korea has moved its way to the United States. Women are now dunking their face in water to create a flawless complexion. The process is known as jamsu, which translates to "submerging." After applying primer, concealer, and foundation to clean, dry skin, you pat a ton of loose powder on top so your face kind of looks like it did when you were 13 and got your first makeup kit. Once your makeup has been thoroughly applied, you then dunk your face into a sink filled with cool water for about 30 seconds. It leaves the skin matte for hours. This beauty technique is frequently used by Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner, and can definitely be achieved at home.
Face shaving isn't just for men! This beauty trend has been around for awhile, but has been recently making a comeback. Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe were known for shaving the dead skin off their face with a razor to reduce the signs of aging. The fancy term for this is dermaplaning. Dermaplaning removes deep layers of dead skin cells and tiny hairs that make your complexion appear dull, by scraping the top layer of skin with a super sharp razor. The process also prevents pores from being clogged that cause acne. Specific dermaplaning razors are sold at most beauty stores, so this trend can be done at home but be careful! DO NOT use the same razor that you use to shave your legs! Ew.
Snail facials are exactly what you would imagine. Snails are actually placed on the face and left on for up to an hour. The snails will glide across the face, leaving behind a mucus that is full of nutrients for the skin. Ancient Greeks used snail mucus to smooth out wrinkles and reduce the signs of aging. Skin is left firmer and softer after, but the results are not apparent right away, it can take few days to see a difference. Dermatologists argue that snail facials do not offer long term benefits and would require multiple uses to see significant results.
